After many months of delays the GoPro Wi-Fi BacPac finally arrived. It hit the shelves with a lot of hype, but that was closely followed with overwhelming disappointment throughout the GoPro user community. The highly anticipated Premium GoPro Accessory was released boasting a small percentage of its advertised features.
The GoPro Wi-Fi BacPac has, or should I say, will have the ability to perform these key tasks:
- Control up to 50 cameras at a time via the GoPro Wi-Fi Remote
- Access and control your GoPro Cameras via smartphones and tablets using the GoPro App
- Live stream videos to the web directly from the camera
The Wi-Fi BacPac has been released in some countries around the world with the ability to use the Wi-Fi Remote and that is all. So once again the waiting game begins. We are now awaiting GoPro to not only finish developing and release their GoPro App for IOS and Android, but we are also waiting for a major firmware update to enable the BacPac to connect to wireless networks and live stream video and photos.
If you are lucky enough to have purchased a Wi-Fi BacPac before they sold out you will notice when scrolling through the settings on the BacPac’s menu, there are a lot of options that say Coming Soon! This premium accessory is quite revolutionary in the Sports Camera industry so understandably there is a lot of work that goes into the design, development and testing of such a revolutionary accessory. But once again loyal GoPro customers are left waiting.
How long will we be waiting is the question. The “GoPro App – Coming Soon!” page on the GoPro support site has had a few updates over the past month or so, with changes to both the features being released with the GoPro App and the expected release date. Currently GoPro have indicated a late August release, but the feature list of what will be included in the app is quite bare.
The initial release of the App is expected to do not a lot more than what the Wi-Fi remote can do, excluding multi-camera control. The only valuable addition being added it the App’s remote view finding capability. All the key features that we are all waiting for with baited breath are listed as “Upcoming features in future GoPro App releases:”
The big question now, is how long will we have to wait? Will we see the GoPro App 1.0 in late August as GoPro have stated? I hope so, but the biggest question is when will we see the future releases? with the functionality that sets GoPro’s Wi-Fi apart from the handful of other camera brands which have already released cameras with Wi-Fi control, preview & view finding capabilities via smartphone and tablet apps.
